Artifact Restoration

1-3 LU Hours

Summary

This workshop will walk you through the different types of artifacts that can be restored or recreated, what a conservator does, illustrate the procedures we use to restore an artifact, give you a complete idea of how something can be restored after being damaged by water or age, the techniques used to restore and re-create them.

  1. We will discuss how to handle a claim where a client has a collection of artifacts, antique furniture, specialized collections such as books, artwork, furnishings, sculptures or paintings.
  2. We will illustrate the various methods of conservation that need to be considered when working with artifacts and treasures as well as the immediate procedures that need to be taken when an artifact or collection has been damaged or is in danger of being damaged.
  3. We will discuss re-creation of certain artifacts. Re-creation will be covered to the extent that we will illustrate the various types of departments that need to be involved when an artifact has been damaged.

Mold Awareness

1-3 LU Hours

Summary

  1. We discuss the misconceptions regarding mold - identifying mold, cleaning vs. removing, product use, the different types of mold, how mold can be useful and the common types of mold.
  2. An explanation of mold remediation is discussed and we illustrate the various ways to remediate mold and the proper way to prepare for mold remediation. We discuss using proper equipment, protecting the person who is doing the work and the proper way to handle the removal or cleaning.
  3. We explain the health risks of mold and who is at risk. We strive to help the participant understand the danger to their health and the health of others if the mold is not remediated quickly.

Water and Building Construction: Damage & Mitigation

Summary

This workshop will walk you through the different types of artifacts that can be restored or recreated, what a conservator does, illustrate the procedures we use to restore an artifact, give you a complete idea of how something can be restored after being damaged by water or age, the techniques used to restore and re-create them.

  1. Understanding the force of water and the damage it can cause by illustrating to the participant how water can infiltrate a building and cause damage as it flows through building materials, chattels and contents. Included in this discussion are points of interest as they relate to historic buildings or historic or significant contents.
  2. Defining and explaining the steps involved in abating water damage. We begin with water mitigation, which means to stop the action the water is taking. We then discuss the various ways to dry a building with contents and the equipment and manpower involved.
  3. We discuss the science of drying and illustrate the four classes of water as well as the three categories of water and how to identify them.
  4. We discuss ways to prevent water damage and provide resources for doing so.
